The Pumpkin Plan: A Simple Strategy to Grow a Remarkable Business in Any Field, by Mike Michalowicz, Portfolio, 1 edition (July 5, 2012), ISBN-13: 978-159184488, 240 pages |
Hmmm. Best summed up with a word from the title “Simple”, simple from the perspective that the book can be summed up in 1 or 2 pages is really just reiterating basic principles of business and entrepreneurship. A lot of the author’s effort is spent emphasizing the analogy of how growing a business is like growing large pumpkin, which after the first couple of chapters is enough pumpkin! The remainder of the book sans the couple pages of business principles is business stories that, you guessed it, compared to the pumpkin patch.
The defining entrepreneur principles that Michalowicz tries to imbue are valuable for entrepreneurs to always keep in mind, but under some circumstances practicing them could also be detrimental to a business. I do question the wide spread value and applicability of this book to most entrepreneurs in today’s economy. Finally I felt the humor did not add value to subject and was not in my taste and in some cases, just bad taste.
As such I rank it 2 out of 5 for content, presentation style and performance. Not one to be re-read or to be kept on the shelf for reference, read it and then pass it on, or better yet pass it by.
